WHAT IS IT?

23 Things is a self-directed, online program. Each week, two blogs are released - “Things” - covering a topic that can enhance how you work - from a useful piece of software, to new research techniques. The blogs are written by academics and experts from across partner institutions, sharing real experience and know-how. It’s an easy way to find out the basics and get different perspectives, with time to experiment and follow up with resources provided to help you take things further, if and when you want. Topics include: the use of AI in research, leadership, project planning for grants, and staying well during research - as well as many others.

Participants have the option to join a ‘Pod’ with other researchers from around the world; connected via the 23 Things Discord server, you can meet, share experiences, and potentially even plan for future collaborations. Essentially, the program is to help you build up a mini-network that goes beyond the obvious links within your institution or field and connects you with people you might otherwise never have met.

As with last year, participants are grouped using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals - now of central importance to many research programs and funders - so whatever your discipline or career stage, you’ll be meeting people with similar passions and priorities. The Pod creates an instant network of researchers with broadly overlapping research interests and some of the Things include small group tasks, helping you to explore topics further together.

WHEN IS IT HAPPENING?

Registration for the 23 Things program is open now, and closes on the 17th February. The program starts when the first ‘Thing’ is released early in March. The course runs for 14 weeks (including two one-week breaks).

The time commitment is very flexible. It’s designed to take about an hour a week (on average) to read the blogs and complete the small tasks, but you can adjust your involvement to suit your own interests and availability. There is no obligation to complete all the tasks, and each pod will decide how and how often they would like to meet. At the end of the program you can claim a certificate and digital badge.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?
